Animal Aromatics

What is Animal Aromatics?

Animal Aromatics gives animals the choice to select their own natural medicines. It works on the organic principle of giving back to animals the medicinal, non-food range of remedies similar in their chemical make-up to those they would naturally seek and use in the wild. These include a variety of essential oils, absolutes, plant extracts, macerated oils such as comfrey, tubers from the devil's claw, clay, spirulina, rosehips and seaweed. Based on Caroline Ingraham's protocols Animal Aromatics encourages and allows the animal to guide its own treatment using its own innate responses.

Animals must be allowed to self-medicate as they would instinctively do so if they were in the wild. A few sniffs of an essential oil may be all that is needed to produce a profound reaction. The animal instinctively self-selects the exact amount needed to inhale or lick until its health is restored, or until the plant oils/extracts are no longer needed. It is vital never to underestimate the animal's innate wisdom. In Animal Aromatics one is guided by the animal's choice of its remedies. The animal may choose to sniff or lick the remedy and, as it is important to allow the animal to self-medicate ,it should always have room to move away from the remedy. External application of extracts/oils is used, but only to specific areas of the body for the treatment of conditions such as wounds, sweet itch, mud fever etc.

How does Animal Aromatics work?

An animal is guided by its sense of smell towards their food, their young, their medicine and away from their enemies. An animal's sense of smell is vital to its survival. By flaring their nostrils they direct the air with all its odours right to their olfactory receptors. This in turn connects to both the cortex and the limbic regions of their brain thereby eliciting many responses.

The first step is a short consultation with the owner to get an idea of what is going on for the animal. This will give the practitioner some ideas as to what to offer the animal.

The second step is to work directly with the animal. Each remedy will be carefully and gently offered to the animal, always allowing them the option to move away. When the animal wants more of a remedy it will be offered as long as needed. When the animal doesn't want a remedy or has had sufficient amounts of a remedy it is time to move on to the next one. This is continued until the session is completed. When treatment is necessary over several days a take home package will be supplied. Length of the session can vary depending on the animal and its journey.

What sorts of conditions can be addressed by Animal Aromatics?

A wide range of conditions can be addressed by Animal Aromatics ranging from physical conditions (e.g. allergies, skin/coat, wounds, aches/sprains/arthritis, lungs, immune stimulants, urinary, blood disorders/cleansers) to behavioral/emotional problems (e.g. aggressiveness, anger; anxiety, balancing, fear, grounding, new home, resentment, shock).
